A major metropolitan airport engaged in the construction of new airport wings and terminals decided to assess its technology infrastructure to ensure that it had enough capacity, scalability, resiliency and the ability to handle upcoming growth.

Solution

VeeMost, working as a subcontractor of a major IT firm in the state, was brought in to perform a comprehensive network infrastructure assessment with security and scalability as a paramount objective.

After spending several weeks interviewing and gathering vital information using special tools and strategies, VeeMost was able to provide valuable insight for the overall network design, its capacity, security and network issues that were both imminent and non-threatening. We assessed the technology aspects of their business continuity plan to ensure that the effect of a disaster would be minimized, if not eliminated.

Result

1.) The city’s aviation IT department sought the help of an outside consulting service to get this project done in a timely fashion as they were unable to take on the project at the time.

2.) The project resulted in a clear and concise plan of what needed to be done and how to phase the projects appropriately while planning for future growth.

3.) They avoided the disaster that could have occurred from expanding rapidly without ensuring the foundation network was solid.

4.) They had a clear understanding of how they could expand their services, provide internet access securely, and connect vendors to their respective home offices or the internet by using their in-house maintained MPLS cloud. 

The major NorthEast Ohio Metropolitan School District, with over 145 locations, needed to revive their use of technology by redesigning their Network Infrastructure.

VeeMost acting as a subcontractor for a multi-million dollar contract with the School District was charged with redesigning the core network Infrastructure.  They were looking to accomplish the following goals:

1.)    Migrate from an old datacenter to a new datacenter in a co-location facility

2.)    Deploy blade servers and a SAN network in this new datacenter

3.)    Design, configure and activate a multihomed internet connection via multiple ISPs

4.)    Migrate all internet traffic from the older datacenter to the newer datacenter

5.)    Acquire an BGP AS and its own assigned public IP address space

6.)    Design the internal network of the new datacenter and ensure it provides redundant connections to the rest of the school district and the internet

7.)    Migrate the entire network backbone from an ATM backbone to a 10Gigabit Ethernet backbone

8.)    Design and implement a solution for remote locations with no access to the network backbone to connect to the datacenter and use all the services provided.

Solution

With over 145 remote school locations, the school district required a high level of technical expertise which led VeeMost to deploy one of its CCIEs to the contract in order to accomplish the objectives listed above and to solve the business challenges they were facing.

VeeMost implemented many solutions that are numerous to mention. In particular, we successfully migrated from the ATM backbone to a 10Gigabit backbone and ensured the servers and services were migrated over to the new datacenter. We assisted the district in acquiring their own BGP AS and IP address space and embarked on a complex project to transition to 4 ISP providers using BGP. We designed and created a DMZ for servers which were accessed by both the public and by the internal users.

We recommended an installed WebSense internet blocking software to allow the district to adhere to regulatory obligations.

We occasionally performed network penetration tests to detect the vulnerability of the network at any given point in time.

Finally, we assisted in implementing a 24x7x365 monitoring of all their network equipment and services.

A prestigious appraisal company needed a way to allow its remote appraisers to input data in real time into the company programs and databases. They were also looking for ways to reduce the thousands of dollars spent on phone bills and faxes involved in an appraisal. All of this needed to be accomplished under the watchful eye of a lone IT staff member.

Solution

VeeMost first sought to understand the underlying business process of the company. We discovered that there were multiple transactions of faxes between the contractors, bankers and the appraisal company, and there was data entry required at the appraisal office. This process was not only time consuming and inefficient, but it was certainly not cost effective or environmentally friendly. The client wanted to utilize technology and begin to automate this process.

Together with our partners, we worked towards automating their entire business operation process. The goal was to allow the banks to send the appraisal information electronically to a server. This server would automatically put the information in the appropriate database and post the job details on a secured website for outside contractors to view. These outsider contractors could now see the job description, bid on the project, and upon completion, remotely input their information into the system.

Next, the details of the appraisal would then be authorized by the owner, and the results would be electronically transferred back to the requesting bank or mortgage company. A process that used to take weeks could now be completed in days or even hours.

As part of this solution, VeeMost recommended and upgraded the entire network infrastructure of the company to position it to take on this new automated process. We completed the following upgrades:

a.) Installed and configured a state-of the-art Cisco Firewall

b.) Installed and configured a Microsoft Exchange server to migrate the company from an internet-based pop3 email to an in-house email system capable of collaboration and integration with their applications

c.) Planned, installed and configured Citrix to publish all of the company’s application on a secure website, allowing both internal and remote users access to the company applications and data

d.) Placed the database and web servers in a Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) to limit any unnecessary attacks from the internet

Result

1.) The company was able to achieve its goal of automating its entire business process. It has now become a trend-setter in the appraisal industry, truly differentiating itself from its competitors.

2.) Installing Citrix allowed the contractors to directly log in and input their appraisal work on the system instead of faxing it.

3.) Citrix also cut down on administrative overhead.  Applications could now be installed once on the Citrix servers and published to all of the users as opposed to individual software installation for each user. 

4.) The entire automation process saved the company hundreds of thousands of dollars on phone bills, faxes, paper and time. They recorded profits in the millions of dollars within a period of a year.

An Ohio-based company looking to leverage the benefits of their data infrastructure decided to get rid of their PBX system and migrate to an IP Telephony solution in order to save money and become more efficient. VeeMost was the selected vendor.

Solution

After our initial assessment of their current PBX phone system design, we came up with a migration plan that involved running both the old and new system in parallel. Until we completed the migration, calls to the company were still routed to the old PBX until after the migration. We established a trunk between the PBX and the new system so that both systems could communicate. Luckily most of their Layer 2 devices had PoE (Power over Ethernet) built into them so that phones could be powered simply by plugging them into the existing switches. We purchased a power injector for the switches that did not have PoE available.

Since this was a small company with less than 100 users in the one location, we opted for the choice of using a Cisco ISR router that has the capability of routing, wireless and voice built into it. This device runs Cisco’s Unified Communication Manager Express software which is the core of their IP Telephony system.

Therefore, the same device that was acting as their default router for their data network was now also their Phone system, maximizing their return on investment. We also purchased a 4-hr Cisco smartnet assurance, which is a hardware warranty assurance program to protect their investment and ensure that a hardware failure would be replaced in no more than 4 hours.

Together with the company we researched and picked out a SIP-based IT SP (internet telephony service provider) so that instead of having a PRI (Primary Rate Interface) line with 23 phone lines, they could use an Ethernet connection to get to their phone service provider. For redundancy purposes and emergency calls, we also kept a couple of POTs (plain old telephone service) lines. 

After the migration, we unconfigured the trunk between the old PBX and the new IP Telephony system. 

Result

VeeMost found various ways to save money for this client.

• First, we used their existing infrastructure for this project, requiring no upgrade whatsoever to the cabling. We extended our Cisco partnership discounts to the customer.  

• The company saved money by moving from a PRI line to an Ethernet connection to their phone service provider. A PRI line essentially gives you 23 lines of 64K each, and although we did not opt for a full 10MB Ethernet, a 10MB Ethernet is a little more than 10 times the bandwidth of a PRI line and is cheaper.

• Our expert knowledge and understanding of the IP Telephony technology allowed us to improve the client’s business processes, making them more efficient and effective.

• Users were now able to receive their voicemails as emails on the desktop or mobile devices.

• An IP Phone can be moved from one office to the other, with the extension now attached to the phone as opposed to the wall, simplifying moves, adds and changes.

• Remote users can also use the IP Communicator software on their laptops and be assigned an extension on the phone network. With this, a remote user can accept calls on their laptop, making them more accessible and productive.  

• Remote users with a VPN connection to the network could also use a regular desk phone, having connection into the office phone network as if they were physically located in the office.

• Finally, they now have one IT maintenance contract with one vendor - VeeMost, which slashed the amount of money previously spent to support the phone system and network infrastructure by more than half.
